Iraq: Heading Off Summer Power Protests

Heading off summer power protests

  • Electricity concerns have taken center stage for much of the Iraqi population, and aside from its relevance to the Arab Spring (discussed in more detail by my colleague Andi Dankert), it is clear that the Energy Ministry is trying to avoid more popular protests (which last occurred in January and February) by offering electricity at a significant discount, and in some cases even free to those with generators; however, the government does not really have the resources to significantly improve the supply of electricity
  • Due to the current and messy oil law discussions, it would seem as though this is the government’s attempt to appease the population while trying to sort out complex questions about how the country will handle energy security across the board
